Large hail Tuesday evening causes damage

NORTHERN INDIANA (WANE) – Severe storms Tuesday evening brought large hail to parts of northern Indiana.

Just take a look at the unbelievable hail video we received from Tony Oneal in Corunna! You can see the large hail battering the water and knocking down leaves and twigs all over the place.

Hail grew up to large apple size in Corunna and Hudson, but it was reported as even larger in Ashley and Kendallville. Keep in mind a four-inch diameter hailstone is the size of a softball, so this was some very large, damaging hail.

Here’s a look at the map as to where hail was reported Tuesday. Notice the concentration in Noble to DeKalb to Steuben Counties.

Hail forms when frozen water droplets are swept up by updrafts. Additional layers of ice form as the hail grows inside of a thunderstorm. Eventually, the weight exceeds the force of the updraft and the hailstone falls.

The hail grew so large on Tuesday because of the powerful updraft speeds of the storms. This means the storms were large and powerful, and had enough cold air high up in the atmosphere to sustain large hail and unfortunately cause damage.
