Gilroy Gardens hit by ransomware attack
Gilroy Gardens said it was hit by a ransomware virus back on Feb. 11. It locked out all on-site servers and machines, including its ticketing system. Customer names and credit card information are stored in that system. But, Gilroy Gardens said the FBI, and third party security experts, do not believe any data was breached or stolen as a result of this attack.
Santa Cruz brewery closes its doors for good
CAPITOLA, Calif. — After nearly 9 years of serving the denizens of Capitola a Pleasure Point brewery is shut down its doors down for good this past weekend. New Bohemia Brewing Company announced on social media that Feb. 25 was the brewery's last day. The owner did not give a reason as to why he made the decision, just that he and his wife made the decision to close down.
Suspect in multiple pharmacy robberies arrested in Morgan Hill
A man suspected of committing multiple pharmacy robberies to obtain prescription medication has been arrested by Morgan Hill Police, the department said Tuesday. The first robbery occurred on Dec. 30 at the Rite-Aid on Monterey Road in Morgan Hill. A man walked up to the pharmacy counter, said he had a gun and demanded prescription medications. The pharmacist complied and handed over the medications, and the suspect fled. Later that day, a similar robbery occurred at a CVS Pharmacy in Gilroy. On Feb. 7, police were alerted to another robbery in Morgan Hill at a CVS on Walnut Grove Drive. Officers believe that the same suspect carried out this robbery with a similar modus operandi of saying he had a gun, demanding medication, and then fleeing. Police eventually identified Hollister resident Rodolfo Duarte, 44, as the suspect in these robberies and allege that he is tied to several others in multiple jurisdictions. Duarte was arrested Friday and booked into the Santa Clara County jail on suspicion of three counts of robbery.

Daytime closure for Highway 1 planned in Soquel
SOQUEL, Calif. — Caltrans announced that they will continue to work Thursday on Highway 1 between the 41st Avenue and Soquel Drive interchanges. This project is to build north and south auxiliary lanes and an improved bus-on-shoulder area. A new bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing at Chanticleer Avenue will also be worked on.
Elderly driver plows into bicyclists along Highway 9 in Santa Cruz Mountains
An 85-year-old woman driving on state Highway 9 in Santa Cruz County near Felton on Tuesday evening veered off the road and collided with four bicyclists, seriously injuring at least two of them, the California Highway Patrol said. At about 6:21 p.m., CHP officers responded to a crash on Highway 9 south of Glengarry Road. The elderly woman from Boulder Creek was driving a Kia Forte northbound as four bicyclists were traveling southbound on the eastern dirt shoulder, north of the Kia's location. According to the CHP, the Kia veered off the roadway and collided with the bicyclists, then traveled in an easterly direction and crashed into a tree, where it came to rest. The Kia driver sustained minor injuries and was not taken to the hospital, but two of the bicyclists suffered major injuries and were transported by air ambulance to a nearby hospital. The other two bicyclists also suffered injuries and were transported by ambulance to nearby hospitals. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, and at this time, alcohol and/or drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash, the CHP said.

In early December, the Board of Supervisors approved how Monterey County will distribute the $20 million it received from the state to speed up Pajaro’s flood recovery. The supervisors allocated $10 million for direct relief to help residents and business owners who were affected by the floods in March 2023.
Suspect nabbed in school burglary
A man was arrested Feb. 21 for stealing thousands of dollars worth of electronic equipment from Bradley Elementary School. Travis Clarke, 33, was charged with burglary, possession of a controlled substance and a probation violation. He was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail, jail records showed.
