It was a festive night on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at the United Farm Workers in Salinas, where rock ‘n’ roll in Spanish, banda and Michael Jackson tunes played from the speakers. Attendees at a No on Measure H party toasted with tequila in honor of late Dolores Huerta, who died on Oct. 28. Before election results came in, they gathered outside to hit a star-shaped piñata that read “Yes on H.”

Salinas voters reject bid to repeal rent stabilization

A ballot measure to repeal rent stabilization in Salinas was defeated Tuesday after the final batch of election night results came in. Measure H, if passed, would have repealed four tenant-related ordinances, including a requirement that all rental units be part of a citywide registry. After the final election night report from the County of Monterey Elections Department, “no” votes led by 59.1% to 40.9%, with 11,590 votes opposed and 8,013 in favor. Protect Salinas Renters, the community group behind the No on H campaign, said in a statement that “the results of Measure H are clear: Salinas voters turned out in force to stand with renters and working families.” “This wasn’t just an election, it was a movement,” the statement continued. “It began when community groups and residents first started organizing for protections after intense rent hikes during the pandemic hit the community hard. The movement picked up pace when a newly elected city council majority voted to strip away critical renter protections in 2025. New tool shows where flood waters might go in Santa Cruz

Early Election Day results show shifts in Salinas council race

Early voting results in the Nov. 3 election showed two incumbents and a challenger leading in the Salinas City Council race . Councilmembes Tony Barrera in District 2 and Margaret D'Arrigo in District 3 were ahead in their contests, while in District 5, Irma Lopez was ahead of Councilmember Andrew Sandoval in a tight race. Early results show Barrera with 63% of the vote faced Jose Guerra (37%), a resident of the Monte Bella community. D’Arrigo, with 59% of the vote, faced business owner Cary Swensen (32%) and Salinas resident Brent Bagley (9%) in a three-way race. Sandoval had 46% of the vote compared to Lopez (54%), a manager of a school family resource center. "I'm excited, I think I'm more energized than I was a few weeks ago," said D'Arrigo at a downtown watch party on Tuesday night. Land use deal brings Sand City one step closer to construction of multi-use trail.

The completion of the multi-use bike trail through Sand City is one major step closer to completion with a new land use agreement. Sand City has long struggled to build the path connecting the trail along the coast of Monterey to Seaside because the proposed project crosses into land belonging to different entities. In particular, the Transportation Agency for Monterey County owns the 100-foot-long stretch of an inactive railroad between Contra Costa Street and La Playa Avenue.

Aric Sleeper here, coming down from the buzz of election night and ruminating on the wins and losses in the cities of Seaside and Monterey, which I cover. One thing that surprised me was that the campaigns in those races with the most cash in their coffers have tentatively lost—as was the case with Alex Miller in Seaside, Vicki Nohrden and Vince Malfitano in Monterey, and Measure H in Salinas—a trend that seemed to be reflected nationally.
