Monterey man arrested on suspicion of anti-Muslim hate crime
MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. - Police in Monterey are investigating an alleged hate crime that occurred the first week of December, the department said Friday. A man reported sitting in his vehicle in the 300 block of Pine Street on Dec. 3 when a person came up and began scratching something into the side of his vehicle. When the suspect realized there was a person sitting in the car, he fled, according to police.
Monterey man killed in Highway 50 crash in El Dorado County
EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. — A 72-year-old man died in a crash on Highway 50 Friday in El Dorado County, according to California Highway Patrol. The crash happened around 9:45 a.m. near Wrights Lake Road. CHP said a vehicle traveling westbound on Highway 50 collided with an embankment and flipped over. The driver died at the scene. CHP identified him as John Rethke from Monterey.

Monterey Museum of Art’s choice to stay downtown is good news for the institution, and for the public.
Last weekend, I got a chance to drop into the Monterey Museum of Art on Pacific Street in Monterey. Illuminado exhibit, a collection of eclectic interpretations of trees. It was opening night, packed with people from children to older adults. To me the best part about the exhibit was how interactive it was—each tree invites the viewer to interact with the art, not just view it. The exhibit is free to the public through Dec. 22.
