Units from Habersham County Emergency Services, Clarkesville Fire Department, and the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office responded at about 2:50pm Tuesday afternoon to a reported house on fire north of Clarkesville. Occupants of the home, located at 127 Lone Wolf Way off Hollywood Highway, were out by the time emergency personnel arrived, but were unable to get all pets out of the house. Two family pets were brought out by firefighters, with Habersham County Emergency Services personnel attempting resuscitation. Sadly, neither pet survived. An interior firefighting team brought the fire under control by just after 3:15pm. Habersham County Emergency Services Engine 9, Engine 14, Med 9, Med 21, Battalion 1, Captain 1, and PIO responded, along with Clarkesville Fire Department Engine 3 and 351, and two units from the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office. Because of a large supply hose from a hydrant on Hollywood Highway, the westbound lane (toward Clarkesville) was closed until about 4:40pm. “We’d like to thank the Habersham County Road Department personnel who came out and brought us cones and assisted the sheriff’s office with traffic control,” said HCES Battalion Chief Jason Garrett. “They were there within just a few minutes, and it was a huge help to us.” The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Internet Scam reported in Lakemont
A Lakemont resident reported an internet scam to the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office on April 23, 2024. The victim said that she attempted to get a $2,500 loan online. She spoke to someone when applying for the loan and gave them her name, address, date of birth, and Social Security number. She was told that she was approved for the loan and $640 was deposited in her account soon thereafter. She became nervous because the total amount of the loan was not deposited and emailed the person she had spoken with during the loan application. She gave them her cashapp account and sent the $640 back to cashapp. She then noticed that another check was cashed into her account and then taken out soon after. She told the deputy that an Amazon account was opened in her name as well as a life insurance policy for $4,000. Her bank told her to file a report with the sheriff’s office because it sounded like she might be a victim of internet fraud.
