Coquille’s Henthorn is middle school state champion
Coquille eighth-grader Ella Henthorn raced to the title in the 1,500 meters at the Middle School Meet of Champions last week. Henthorn ran a new personal best 4 minutes, 46.47 seconds to edge Evangeline Johnson of Spencer Butte Middle School in Eugene. Cycle Oregon trained third grade students in Bandon biking safety
Friends of Bandon Parks and Recreation partnered with Cycle Oregon to offer bicycle training for 60 third grade students at Ocean Crest school in Bandon. Generous donations by United Way of South-western Oregon, Best Western at Face Rock, Rotary Club of Bandon By-the-Sea and Walmart North Bend, made the event possible. The funds purchased: six youth bicycles, 100 helmets, 20 water bottles, artwork for handouts and bicycle parts poster, 100 bicycle pins, and cycling booklets in English and Spanish, and 100 bike ABC’s bookmark reminders. Bike Rodeo was kicked off with Captain Dillon of the Bandon Police department. He discussed the rules of the road and watching out for cars. Cycle Oregon transport-ed 20 bikes from Port-land for students to ride. Shawne Martinez, the cycling instructor, taught drills, maneuvers and safety. Inside the gym, seven volunteers taught the ABC’s— Air, Brakes, Chain. The students were inquisitive and very respectful.
