Murder charges have been filed in last week's deadly domestic violence incident in Coon Rapids.

It happened shortly before 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 1, on the 10300 block of Jay Street Northwest. Responding officers discovered the victim, a man identified in court documents only as "DEP," lying in the home's entryway "shirtless and covered in blood."

He was pronounced dead at a local hospital; medical examiners later found he'd been stabbed multiple times, with a stab wound to the femoral artery in his right thigh proving fatal.

Romelle Flowers, 25, was found on foot nearby a short time later with blood on his face, hands and shirt, the charges against him say.

According to the criminal complaint, Flowers' mother (identified as "ATMP") told police that her son and DEP "had been arguing" all day prior to the stabbing, with the two coming to blows late in the night. The couple went to bed a short time later around 2:30 a.m., but Flowers continued to "bang things around" in the home, throwing a lighter noisily.

ATMP said she soon woke up to "the sound of the Defendant and DEP fighting and walked out of her bedroom to find DEP bleeding profusely, and the Defendant running out of the house."

Following his arrest, the charges say, Flowers told police he had been staying with his mom and her boyfriend for several days. The day before the murder, he said he'd been "drinking and watching TV in the living room all day and that DEP attacked him twice":

The Defendant said he “just took it,” the first time but fought back the second time. The Defendant claimed DEP was mad at him for throwing [the Defendant’s] lighter away too hard, causing a loud noise.

The bloody knife was later found among some trees across from the residence.

Flowers is charged with second-degree murder and faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted.

He is currently in custody in an Anoka County Jail, with bail set at $1,000,000.
