The news is out and the play is in.

Coon Rapids High School Theater brings “Newsies” to the stage for its spring musical April 26-28 and May 2-4.

“Shortly after we closed ‘Beauty and the Beast’ last spring, we made the decision to produce ‘Newsies’ this season,” director Karla Haij said. “What we didn’t know and couldn’t have known is that this year, unions, strikes, workers’ rights would be a part of the local, regional and national news. For that reason, ‘Newsies’ is more relevant than ever, and we are so excited to tell the historical story of the newsies.”

Following the trail of newsboy Jack Kelly and friends from the famed Broadway musical, the moving tale mixes with a Tony Award-winning score for a thrilling adventure for cast and audience alike.

“My favorite part of my character is her resilience and determination,” said Ellie Carson, who plays the newsie Finch. “She’s one of the first newsies to strike, and determined to follow through for her newsie family. I think what the audiences will love most about Finch is her protectiveness of her friends, especially Crutchie.”

“The cast has enjoyed every step and part of the process of creating a musical,” Haij said. “They love the music and choreography and have met the challenge of both with tremendous energy and commitment. I hope audiences are captivated by the Newsies — their grit, their courage, their story — because it’s an inspiring one.”

Performances are Friday, April 26 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, April 27 at 7 p.m.; Sunday, April 28 at 2 p.m.; Thursday, May 2 at 7 p.m.; Friday, May 3 at 7 p.m.; and Saturday, May 4 at 7 p.m. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.onthestage.tickets/coon-rapids-high-school-theatre.
