Ohio State’s top-ranked recruit in the 2025 class now comes at the most important position in football.

In the new 247 Sports updated player rankings for the class of 2025, Tavien St. Clair is the No. 2 player now, behind only LSU QB commit Bryce Underwood.

Overall, the Buckeyes have three commits in the top 10 with CB Devin Sanchez at No. 4 and CB Na’eem Offord at No. 6 in the class.

For the Buckeyes to have an instate quarterback committed that has had such a rank, it just hasn’t happened. Braxton Miller was a five-star out of Dayton, but he was ranked the No. 20 overall recruit in the class of 2011.

St. Clair made a big jump in his play from his sophomore to junior year at Bellefontaine High School. Already at 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, St. Clair is growing into what is already a prototypical build at the position.

The rise of St. Clair isn’t often seen. A year ago to the date he was named the No. 2 overall player, St. Clair was ranked No. 247 in the class overall. After committing to the Buckeyes, St. Clair was no longer a sleeper prospect and individuals learned who he actually was. Combine that with the big year-over-year jump and now he is one of the best players in the country.

Ohio State brought in both Air Noland and Julian Sayin in the previous class, so St. Clair won’t have much of a chance to start as a freshman likely when he arrives in a year. Will Howard is in a position to run things this season, then Sayin and Noland battle it out next year ideally. Still, it wouldn’t be a shocker to see St. Clair as the guy during his second season in 2026.

Perhaps an Elite 11 win or a big senior season is what St. Clair needs to take over the No. 1 spot. With the rise that he has already had, I wouldn’t root against it happening.
