COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) — Two men have been arrested in connection to a fatal shooting last weekend near the Ohio State Fairgrounds that police said appears to have been a drug deal gone bad.
Brian Richardson, 59, and Derek Miller, 42, have both been charged with murder in the shooting death of Jerry T. Harper Jr., 54, in a double shooting on the 400 block of East 13th Avenue on May 4.
Both Richardson and Miller, who was also shot in the incident, were arrested on Wednesday. Miller remains in custody while being treated for his injuries.
Columbus police responded to the scene at approximately 8:38 p.m., where Harper and Miller were both found suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were taken to Grant Medical Center in critical condition, where Harper was pronounced dead at 1:55 a.m. Sunday.
According to court records, Harper went to Richardson’s apartment to buy drugs. Richardson allegedly contacted Miller, letting him know that Harper would have a large amount of money with him. While in Richardson’s apartment, Miller and Harper allegedly exchanged gunfire, court records allege.
Police allegedly found text messages from Richardson to Miller sent about six minutes before the attempted robbery.
Richardson was arraigned on the murder charge on Wednesday and is scheduled to next appear in court on May 17. He was given a $500,085 bond at the hearing and remains in custody in Franklin County Jail as of Wednesday afternoon.
Online court records do not show a scheduled court date for Miller.
