Breese Restaurant Owner looks to expand and open restaurants in Vandalia
Among the five liquor licenses requested at last week’s Vandalia City Council meeting was a license for a restaurant. Don Schomaker of Germantown came before the Vandalia City Council to request both a Class E Liquor License and Gaming License as he looks to open restaurants in Vandalia. Schomaker currently operates two restaurants in Breese and would like to bring a similar concept to Vandalia.
Fire Destroys Trailer In Litchfield
Two cats were killed in a fire in Litchfield on February 25th. The fire occurred at 11:57 PM on the 800 block of South Franklin Street. Montgomery County 9-1-1 received a call saying that the side of a house trailer was on fire. When first responders arrived, a residential trailer with moderate smoke and flames was coming from a window air conditioning unit on the south side of the house.
Rural Ramsey Man Found Dead After Long Search
A rural Ramsey man was found dead Tuesday afternoon after multiple agencies has been in engaged in a search for several hours. Fayette County Coroner Dave Harris says that 83 year old Austin Sanders was found dead in a creek bed at the bottom of a steep embankment about 3/4 of a mile west of his home. Mr. Sanders was pronounced dead at the scene by the Fayette County Coroner’s Office at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon. Coroner Harris says it appears to be an accidental death and no foul play is suspected. Several agencies and volunteers were involved in the search for Mr. Sanders, who had last been seen by a neighbor on Saturday afternoon.

US EPA Announces Cleanup of Asarco Site
The area once was home to the world’s largest lead smelter and in its day, when Asarco pumped out paychecks and put food on the table, it had a lot of positive impact. Then when it closed, the legacy became less and less nostalgic as the years have passed. Local leaders have sought a cleanup of the site far beyond their means. Yesterday, the US EPA announced a breakthrough on that front. The Asarco site was among sites chosen for cleanup in a third and final wave of cleanups under a one billion dollar effort nationwide. Asarco is among 25 new Superfund cleanup projects. EPA Deputy Administrator Janet McCabe. “This final round of Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding has made it possible for EPA to initiate clean ups at every single Superfund site where construction work is ready to begin. This is an incredible milestone in our efforts to clean up and protect communities, deliver local jobs, enhance economic activity, and improve people’s lives for years to come.”
Fort Smith man sentenced for trafficking 40 pounds of meth in Illinois
A Fort Smith man was sentenced to 30 years in prison for tracking about 40 pounds of methamphetamine, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office Southern District of Illinois.

Additional information has been obtained by WGEL pertaining to a train-SUV crash that occurred Saturday, February 17. A Bond County deputy identified the driver of the Hummer vehicle as Theresa Noble, age 51, of St. Louis, Missouri. Passengers included Tina Pulley, age 54 of Granite City, and Danielle Pruett, 34, of Chesterfield, Missouri.
Sophie Bowers wins Vandalia’s first IHSA girls wrestling title
Vandalia junior Sophie Bowers rebounded from a year lost to injury in style, claiming a state championship in her first attempt. Bowers won four matches in Bloomington to become the first VCHS female wrestler to win an IHSA state title, claiming the championship with a 6-0 decision over Kinnley Smith of Canton. She is the second VCHS female to claim state titles, the first being Morgan Dothager, who won back-to-back championships in the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials state finals.
