College football: No. 4 UW-Whitewater topples No. 2 UW-Platteville 24-21 to clinch share of WIAC title

PLATTEVILLE — Saturday’s game between UW-Whitewater and UW-Platteville certainly lived up to the hype, and ultimately the Warhawks emerged not only with a 24-21 win, but at least a share of the 2026 WIAC title. The No. 4 Warhawks (9-0, 6-0 WIAC) made every point count in the 33rd annual Battle for the Miner’s Axe, as UWW was able to hand the Pioneers (8-1, 5-1 WIAC) their first loss of the season to clinch a share of the 2026 WIAC regular season championship. UW-Platteville did end up out-gaining UW-Whitewater 340 yards to 305, but massive third down stops by the Warhawk defense proved the deciding factor in the tight win. UWW also played an extremely clean game, only committing one penalty for five yards when the team entered the weekend averaging five penalties for 55 yards per game. The Warhawks faced adversity early with the Pioneers showing just why they entered the weekend ranked No. 2 in the nation. Durand-Arkansaw falls to No. 1 Darlington in Level 3 matchup

DARLINGTON — Top-ranked Darlington won the WIAA state football title in Divsion 6 last year. The Redbirds may be well on their way to winning the Division 5 championship this year. Darlington bolted to a big early lead before earning a 47-28 win over No. 4 Durand-Arkansaw in the Level 3 state quarterfinals Friday night. The visiting Panthers capped a strong season with a 10-2 overall record after going 8-1 during the regular season. Durand-Arkansaw won a pair of home playoff games in advancing to Level 3. Senior quarterback Luke Weber passed for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Panthers. Weber hit Dylan Berger for a 5-yard TD before connecting with Miles Kralewski on a 26-yard score. Weber also ran for an 11-yard touchdown. A.J. Wittig added a 15-yard touchdown run for Durand-Arkansaw. Weber finished 12 of 23 passing for 162 yards and two touchdowns. Kralewski led the Panthers defense with eight tackles. Teammate Jackson Pichler added seven tackles. Darlington (12-0) advances to play No. 2 Amherst in the state semifinals next Friday.
