CLEVELAND (WJW) — Firefighters reported a “mayday” call from a burning home in Cleveland on Monday morning.
Firefighters said a mother and her twin 11-month-old babies were out safely, but two firefighters were injured, as well as a witness who entered the home to help save one of the children.
According to officials, the mother was able to escape with one of her twins. Before fire crews arrived, a 50-year-old witness entered the burning home and pulled the second baby from the fire.
“I think he saved that child’s life,” said Lt. Mike Norman. “My understanding is he risked his life, went into that house to bring that baby out.”
The mother and children were transported to the hospital and were reported to be in stable condition. The witness was transported to the hospital due to smoke inhalation, and is also in stable condition, officials on scene said Monday morning.
Crews said when they arrived at the scene in the 3600 block of West 102nd Street, at about 9:30 a.m., the three-story home was fully engulfed in flames.
According to officials, a “mayday” call was reported shortly before 10 a.m. after a firefighter became trapped in a porch collapse. Officials on the scene said three firefighters were on the porch at the time.
According to a social media post by the Cleveland Fire Department, the injured firefighter was taken to a nearby hospital. Officials on the scene said he suffered a leg injury but was in stable condition. A second firefighter was also hurt in the fire with a shoulder injury.
According to fire officials, the cause of the fire was determined to be “accidental/electrical.”
It’s not clear if the home had working smoke detectors.
