Two more blocks of downtown Fremont added to road construction, at $40,000 savings
FREMONT – Very old bricks are showing in South Front Street, for the couple blocks in front of the Municipal Building, and as a surprise, an extra two blocks of road construction have been added to the project. The road grinders, dump trucks and steamrollers probably would have otherwise...
Monday Memories: Toledo enlisted 3 million ladybugs to battle scale bugs in 1974
Scale bugs are the bane of silver maple trees, burrowing into the base of twigs to drink the liquid, eventually killing the limb. Expensive pesticides could be used to control the pests, but in the ‘70s, the city decided to deploy a cheap natural predator, the whimsical-looking ladybug. The ladybugs devour the bugs, decimating the pest population. In this Blade archive photo, Adam Green and Erica Benjamin, dressed as ladybugs, open a bag full of the insects, preparing to release them near some trees. For that years’ ladybug campaign, the city purchased 3 million bugs at $10 a gallon from a farm in Rough and Ready, Calif. City forestry officials said that was a fraction of the $4,600 it would have cost over two months for two-man crews, machinery and insecticides to eradicate the infestation. Sunflowers shine on new mural in Pemberville
PEMBERVILLE, Ohio — A few miles past a sign welcoming visitors to the sleepy village of Pemberville, Ohio, people are greeted by a striking new mural on the feed mill at the intersection of Bierley Avenue and East Front Street. Standing 80 feet tall, the Countyline Co-Op feed mill has been carefully painted with a field of sunflowers overlooking a river. In the background sits a classic red barn, as a bald eagle flies past fluffy, sunlit clouds. The Pemberville Mural Project was spearheaded by Roberta Reiter, whose goal was to enhance the village's aesthetic qualities. She led both the fund-raising and the decision-making for the production of the painting. “I am truly amazed at the force of Roberta Reiter,” Pemberville Mayor Carol Bailey said. “I've always known she was special, but this put her up a peg or two.”
🦸♀️Meet the Garrison Street Girls, downtown Fremont's new business owners
Good morning, Sandusky County. I know that not everyone will agree with me on this, but I can't help growing up in the great white north. Today's high of 71 degrees sounds great to me, and a low of 54 degrees is just great sleeping weather. There's not expected to be much wind, but if so, I may close the windows at night.
Ceremony to honor Toledo firefighters
The Toledo Fire & Rescue Department will hold its annual memorial service at noon Monday in Chub DeWolfe Park, where North Huron, Beech, and Orange streets meet. The service, in its 63rd year and open to the public, will honor the memory of the 61 Toledo firefighters who have died in the line of duty serving the city. The first fatality occurred in 1872, when James Welch fell from a ladder at a fire at Lafayette and Ottawa streets, according to the fire department records. This year, Private Sterling “Butch” Rahe’s name was added to the memorial after he died Jan. 1 from complications of an on-duty injury. Guest speaker this year is state Rep. Haraz Ghanbari (R., Perrysburg), who is an Ohio certified volunteer firefighter.
Palisades restart could be a first in history
Two hundred miles northwest of Toledo, along the shoreline of one of the world’s largest and most picturesque freshwater lakes, a nuclear power experiment believed never to have been tried before is getting serious consideration. The mothballed Palisades nuclear plant, along Lake Michigan’s eastern shoreline, could be restarted a little more than a year from now, in late 2025, if the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission gives the go-ahead. The NRC has a restart panel listening to pros and cons now. The next public meeting is expected in July. Palisades itself isn’t new. The plant began operating March 24, 1971, and continued for more than 50 years.

The Perrysburg Township trustees have hired Rudolph-Libbe Inc. of Walbridge, Ohio, to lead construction on the new $3.7 million administration building. At Wednesday’s meeting, the trustees voted to approve the hiring. Trustee Joe Schaller, whose brother works for Rudolph-Libbe, abstained. “We’ve punted for years and years on this,” said Trustee Bob Mack. “I think it’s time — especially with the COVD-ARPA funding, use it or lose it — I think it’s time to transform the way the township presents itself.” The trustees will use $1.2 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds for the project.
