Cities Are Getting Hotter - And It’s Costing Us More Than Just Comfort
Climate change is raising the heat across the planet and in cities throughout the world, including Albany, the way we build our communities can raise that heat even more. On a hot summer afternoon a city can feel dramatically different from the surrounding countryside. Roads and parking lots bake in the sunshine while buildings absorb heat. Concrete and pavement then slowly release that stored heat which keeps the temperatures up long after the sun goes down. This is the urban heat island effect, and it means city residents can experience significantly more heat than people living in less-developed areas nearby. And there is an important new wrinkle: the background warming caused by climate change is making that urban heat problem even more significant.
