CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — The Clarksburg History Museum is hoping to highlight the city and surrounding area’s history with unique tours, including one focusing on the Civil War.

The Clarksburg History Museum hosted one of these tours on Saturday to show attendees the rich history involving the battle within the city.

The guide-led tour began inside the museum with displays of artifacts from the Civil War and descriptions of how influential characters from the Clarksburg area affected the nation’s history.

Afterward, those in attendance gathered for a trolley ride around the city, where historic museums and landmarks were featured to help showcase Clarksburg’s impact on the war.

Clarksburg Museum’s president Michael Spatafore talked about some key factors locals within the area may not know about Clarksburg’s influence on the Civil War.

“John Carlile was one of the founding fathers of West Virginia, people don’t realize that he was born here in Clarksburg,” Spatafore said. “He actually gathered a group of 1200 men on the courthouse plaza, so that led to the wheeling conventions that led to the statehood of West Virginia.”

The Clarksburg History Museum will host a variety of tours throughout the summer, including walking tours, historic cemetery tours and ghost tours. You can find more information on those events on the museum’s website and Facebook page .
