Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) – The Clark County Planning Commission gave the go-ahead Tuesday night for a Mormon temple to be built in the northwest valley.

The measure passed by a vote of 6-1.

The meeting drew more than 1,000 people who spoke on both sides of the issue

The temple would go up on a 20-acre site that the LDS owns near Lone Mountain and Grand Canyon, and would be 216 feet tall and 70,000 square-feet in size.

Some nearby residents say the proposed temple is simply too big and would block their view of the nearby mountains. They also expressed concerns about increased traffic and general congestion.

Church leaders say they will work with people that live nearby about those concerns.

Up next is a vote by the Las Vegas City Council. That isn’t scheduled to take place until July 17 th .
