KMA forum set for sheriff's candidates
(Shenandoah) -- The two candidates for the Page County Sheriff's Republican nomination square off in a special event on KMA later this month. Chief Deputy Charles McCalla and Deputy Lindsey Stephens have agreed to participate in a candidate's forum airing May 22nd at 7 p.m. at the KMA studios in Shenandoah. Both candidates vie to succeed Lyle Palmer, who is not running for reelection.
Red Oak fire, police departments bringing bike rodeo to Inman Elementary
(Red Oak) -- Red Oak elementary students can learn all about bike safety early next week. That's because the Red Oak Fire and Police Departments and several other partners are putting on a Bike Rodeo at Inman Elementary from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through the Fire Prevention and Community Safety Program. Levi Kinnison is a firefighter-paramedic with the fire department. Speaking on KMA's "Morning Show" program recently, Kinnison says the free event promotes bicycle safety and is open to all 3rd through 5th graders.
Clarinda Lakin child center celebrated Wednesday
(Clarinda) -- Southwest Iowa Families now has a spacious new facility to service its clients. Activities celebrating the Lakin Foundation Child and Family Center's grand opening takes place Wednesday. Public tours of the new building at 117 West Main Street in Clarinda are scheduled between 3:30-to-6 p.m., with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 p.m. Sandy Geer is Southwest Iowa Families' administrative director. Though the building's actual opening took place in January, Geer tells KMA News the tour and ribbon-cutting officially marks the project's completion.
Nodaway Valley Girls Golf Runner-Ups in Class 1A Region 5A
(Sully, IA)- It’s a second-place finish for the Wolverines girls’ golf team as they finish behind Martensdale as a team and in individual medals. Martensdale takes the team top spot with a score of 406, Nodaway Valley comes up behind them with a score of 429, and Southeast Warren rounds out the top three with a score of 483.

McQueen: low water levels led to pool season's cancellation
(Shenandoah) -- Shenandoah officials are defending the decision to keep the city's outdoor pool closed this summer. Following a recent Shenandoah Parks and Recreation Board of Directors meeting, city officials announced last week that the Wilson Aquatic Center won't open for the 2024 season. Shenandoah Mayor Roger McQueen tells KMA News the city's low water levels led to a consensus to keep the pool closed.
Red Oak council tabs Terracon to assist in Brownfields grant application
(Red Oak) -- Red Oak officials have backed filing a grant application to assess and clean up potentially contaminated properties. During its regular meeting this week, the Red Oak City Council unanimously approved working with Terracon to seek an Environmental Protection Agency community-wide assessment grant of up to $500,000 through the Brownfields program. The program is funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure law and grants money to cities for cleaning up buildings or for assessing and cleaning up abandoned properties that once managed dangerous chemicals. Frank Uhlarik is a Regional Brownfields Manager with Terracon. Uhlarik says the types of properties that could be dealing with some form of contamination can vary.
Shenandoah baseball returning a lot of experience
(Shenandoah) -- The Shenandoah baseball team is returning every player that started a game last year, five of which will be seniors this upcoming season. Head Coach Brett Roberts is thrilled with that kind of return, and with the talent they will have combined with all those games under their belts, Roberts is hoping for big things this season.
Geography with Goudge: NCAA Women's Beach Volleyball Players, 2024
(KMAland) -- Dr. Ted Goudge, a Shenandoah native and retired Associate Professor of Geography at Northwest Missouri State University, has released his latest geography map. Beach volleyball is the 90th and newest NCAA sport. The 8th National Championship was played last weekend in Gulf Shores, AL. The USC Trojans won their sixth title. The per capita production of NCAA beach volleyball players is greater in coastal states and the Midwest. Arizona leads followed by Hawaii, Nebraska, Colorado and Alabama. There are 97 NCAA women’s beach volleyball programs across all divisions resulting in 1,731 players. 170 or slightly less than 10% of the players come from outside the U.S. Led by Canada, Brazil, and the Czech Republic.
Clarinda Foundation seeks applicants for 2024 grant cycle
(Clarinda) -- A local foundation is once again offering grant dollars for projects in and around Clarinda. The Clarinda Foundation recently opened up its 2024 grant cycle last month, which funds project ideas in Clarinda and the surrounding area. Last year, 13 projects were awarded over $120,000. Beckie Finch is the foundation's director. Speaking on KMA's "Morning Show" recently, Finch says the grant funds are available to 501(c)(3) non-profit entities, educational institutions, or government entities.
SUV vs Motorcycle Accident in Red Oak
(Red Oak) A Red Oak man suffered possible minor injuries in a SUV vs motorcycle accident in Red Oak. The Red Oak Police Department says the accident occurred in the 1400 block of North 4th Street at approximately 11:53 a.m. on Friday. 67-year-old Annette Archer, of Red Oak, was driving a 2014 Hyundai Tucson, backing onto North 4th Street from the alley on the east side of the roadway. Archer’s view was partially obscured due to parked vehicles along the road. As she was backing onto 4th Street, Archer failed to see a 2017 Harley Davidson being driven northbound by 55-year-old Ronald Lorenz, of Red Oak. Lorenz was unable to maneuver quickly enough to avoid a collision. The motorcycle struck the passenger side rear of the SUV and then tipped onto its side.
