Ohio's still in the dark on dark money: Here are today's top stories | Daily Briefing

Good morning, I'm state government reporter Jessie Balmert .

In Ohio, federal and state prosecutors are untangling one of the largest corruption scandals in the nation, involving a powerful utility, Akron-based FirstEnergy, that admitted it bribed one top lawmaker and a utility regulator through multiple dark money groups .

But unlike in other states, Ohio has not passed a law to reveal the source of those donations.

Efforts from Republicans, Democrats and a bipartisan group have all gone nowhere – even as Ohio’s leaders say they support more transparency in the murky web of secretive spending .

Opponents of disclosure say reporting the source of each dollar could vilify corporations and groups with good ideas and discourage them from participating in Ohio politics.
