Although the majority of seasons remain unchanged, notable changes include: ...
Cupola House's Easels in Gardens draws 3 dozen artists
Ticket-holders to last week’s Easels in the Garden not only got to tour 12 of Edenton’s most beautiful gardens, they also were able to watch some three dozen artists painting their interpretations of Edenton in the spring. Easels in the Garden attendees paid to visit the gardens, discuss them with docents, and watch artists at work. Painters in several media were on hand to answer questions about their art. The gardens were open for six hours on Friday, April 26, and two hours on Saturday,...
Tobias column: How a 7-year-old preacher's son went East of Eden
About a hundred years ago, on a hot Sunday night in Tulsa, Oklahoma, my 7-year-old self discovered a great-balls-of-fire entertainment for a boy who would rather be watching “The Wild, Wild West” than sitting through an unending sermon, just waiting for “Just As I Am” and the last “Amen.” Between you and me and the deep blue sea, here is my secret sure-fire technique to get through interminably long church services. If you want, you can try it, too. ...
You might find this show entertaining
I discovered a new YouTube channel about eight months ago and I have found myself actually looking forward to new episodes every week, so I wanted to share it with you. Maybe you’ll find it as interesting as I do. There exists a gentleman and journalist by the name of Pablo Torre. If you don’t know him by name, you might recognize his mischievous smile and overly exposed calves from ESPN shows like High Noon, Around The Horn, Highly Questionable and a plethora of other...
Rockin the streets: Boogie on Broad draws hundreds to downtown
Several hundred music fans gathered on Edenton’s blocked-off Broad Street Friday, April 26, for Boogie on Broad, an evening of live music, family amusement for the kids, and vendors offering craft beers and wine. Vendors catered to children with face painting and toy balloons, while other vendors served craft beers and wine by the glass. Boogie on Broad was the first of four summer concerts arranged by Destination Downtown Edenton,...

The Albemarle Queen, Harbor Towns' paddle wheel excursion boat, docks in Edenton
Harbor Town Cruises’ excursion-dinner boat, The Albemarle Queen, arrived at the municipal docks in Edenton last weekend. Harbor Towns purchased the 99-foot paddle wheeler, formerly named the Anna Marie Princess, from its Florida-based owners, after deciding it was cost-prohibitive to continue making repairs to the vessel it had planned use as a dinner-excursion boat, the Eagle I. Harbor Towns said the Anna Marie Princess was built in Pickwick, Tenn., in...

John A. Holmes High School’s Herren Project held its Healthy Soles 5K run in downtown Edenton on Saturday, April 27, with a record 93 runners navigating a course starting near Edenton’s Farmer’s Market and continuing past Edenton’s waterfront. Kelley Duruman, a community volunteer working with the Herren Project, supervised the race. ...

Orr column: Recipe for Key lime pie originated in Key West in 1800s
I recently had a slice of neon green pie that made me curious about a popular southern dessert. Its creamy sweet texture was balanced by citrus undertones, but it didn’t have that familiar look of my favorite pie from childhood days. After a little research I did find “rules” for Key lime pie set forth by Floridians, that even went up before that state’s Legislature in 1965 but were narrowly defeated. The rules dictated that Key lime pie must only be made with Key limes,...
Arts in Bloom complements CAC's Easels in the Garden
Chowan Arts Council Director Meredith Timberlake wanted an art display to complement the Cupola House’s Easels in the Gardens festival, which was held the weekend of April 26-27. Her solution was simple and effective: Arts in Bloom. Arts in Bloom is a series of flower arrangements by local artists and art patrons designed to complement specific paintings that hang on the Arts Council gallery’s walls. ...
Jacavone column: Philosophy of Star Wars deeper than good-evil conflict
Happy Star Wars Day, and May the Fourth be with you! Today, people all over the world may wear something Star Wars-related or watch one of the many Star Wars films and television series. The truly dedicated may even dare to binge through all eight episodic films (though in this author’s opinion, “The Rise of Skywalker” does not exist). Between the vast space opera plot, huge interplanetary battles and lightsaber...

Edenton must pay electric supplier additional $715K
The town of Edenton must pay its electric supplier $715,020 over the next two years because of higher-than-anticipated energy costs in 2022. The city of Elizabeth City and the town of Hertford also must pay the N.C. Eastern Municipal Power Agency almost $2.1 million and $168,139, respectively, because of those added costs. That’s because NCEMPA, which is the electric supplier for the three municipalities, has an agreement with Duke Energy...

Tobias column: Chorale concert will pierce your heart with beauty
I’ve had the privilege and pleasure of singing with my friends in the Albemarle Chorale for seven years. We’ve sung a lot of wonderful music. But this spring’s concert, I think, will be the loveliest and most meaningful. In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Edenton Resolves (which was a revolutionary action of defiance against the British Crown by 51 courageous women who did not hide behind disguises), the Chorale is singing 11 works either lyricized or composed (or both) by female poets and...
A reluctant National Hockey League fan
Have you ever disliked something because you wanted to? Maybe it felt foreign, was something you enjoyed making fun of or maybe you also really enjoyed making fun of the people who liked it. Maybe it was all of the above. Did you end up liking it anyway? If so, you can relate to my path to hockey fandom. I have made fun of hockey for as long as I...

Board discusses steps for putting rec bond referendum on ballot
Chowan commissioners last week discussed the steps for putting a bond referendum before county voters this fall that, if approved, would finance up to $35 million in recreation improvements. The April 19 meeting, which covered only the financial aspects of the referendum, provided a first glimpse of the proposal commissioners plan to place on the county ballot in the November general election. The county is considering two possible amounts for a bond referendum: one package for $20 million and another for $35 million. ...
Chowan bond would fund $35M in upgrades to parks, rec facilities
Chowan commissioners are considering a bond referendum that, if approved, would allow the county to make up to $35 million in upgrades to county parks and recreation facilities. Nate Halubka, a project consultant with McGill Associates of Hickory, presented commissioners with a preliminary master plan for the improvements at an April 19 meeting. His plan was based on findings that parks within Edenton town limits provide adequate recreation for residents, but are dated. The town is planning to upgrade many of those parks using funds...
