    4-H'ers compete for honors at 70th Chowan Livestock Show

    Fifty-three youth in Chowan County 4-H program competed for honors in lamb, goat, and hog husbandry on April 16 at the 70th annual Chowan County 4-H Livestock Show at the American Legion Fairgrounds.

    Participating in the livestock show were Karley Byrd, a senior at Lawrence Academy, and seven seniors at John A. Holmes High School: Com Hannah Harris, Ben Monds, Hannah Nixon, Amaris Oliver, Adrianna Parrish, Brayden Pippins, and Jaiden Walters-Bradley.

    Barn Buddies, exceptional Children from White Oak Elementary School, were paired with a lamb or goat livestock exhibitor. They walked the show ring during the competition, even accompanying the winners to receive their medals. The Barn Buddies were organized by the Chowan Future Farmers of America.

    Clover-bud competitors, ages 5-7, gained experience in the show ring, answering judges’ questions and walking the animals around for the judges. Ten Clover-bud exhibitors participated, showing goats, lambs and hogs.

    Youths ages 8-18 participated in the market competition, earning grand, reserve, and third-place awards, with first-, second-, and third-place awards in the junior and senior showmanship classes.

    Camryn Pippins, daughter of Mike and Alison Pippins, won the Grand Champion Hog Award. Brayden Pippins, son of J.P. and Megan Pippins, took the Reserve Champion Hog Title. Chloe Chappell, daughter of Quintin and Melissa Chappell took the Third Place Hog Title.

    Showmanship awards went to Camryn Pippins, who won first place; Laine Goodwin, who won second place; and Chloe Chappell, who took third place.

    Junior Hog Showmanship Awards went to Jase Goodwin, who won first place; Alana Brumfield, who took second place; and Emma Nixon, who won third place. Pippins received the 2024 Willis Ray Byrum Senior Showman Trophy.

    Sydney Eure, daughter of Towe and Allison Eure, earned the Grand Champion Lamb title as well as the Junior Showmanship First Place Award. Jaiden Walters-Bradley, daughter of Paul and Sarah Bradley, took Reserve Champion Lamb honors and first place in senior showmanship.

    Amaris Oliver, daughter of John and Jessica Oliver, won the Grand Champion Goat title; Adrianna Parrish, daughter of Carey and Rosanna Parish, took the Reserve Champion Goat title; and Karley Byrd, daughter of Steven and Stephanie Byrd, took third place.

    Senior Goat Showmanship awards went to Karly Byrd, daughter of Steven and Stephanie Byrd, who won first place; Adrianna Parrish, who won second; and Amaris Oliver, who took third.

    Junior Goat Showmanship awards went to Bella Parish, who won first place; Charlotte Parrish, who took second place; and Skylar Biggs who took third place.

    A cake auction also raised money for the livestock program.
