A company that recently settled a long-standing, potentially multimillion-dollar lawsuit with the Monroe County government again wants a potentially multimillion-dollar debris hauling contract and has offered $100,000 from the settlement to six local charities. John Underwood went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at the age of 88. He was born in Miami, Florida on Nov. 25, 1934 to Edward and Kathryn (Russell) Underwood. He graduated from the University of Miami in 1956 and was a reporter for both the Miami News and Miami Herald before writing for Sports Illustrated (SI) from 1961 to 1985 as a senior editor. John traveled to six continents on assignments with SI, authored 10 books (three of which were New York Times bestsellers), testified before a Senate Subcommittee on NCAA Sports, interviewed President Gerald Ford, wrote an Emmy award-winning documentary, “Jockey,” and was often referred to as the “conscience of sport in America.”

Wesley House seeks foster parents
Wesley House Family Services is seeking nurturing families interested in providing a loving home to children and teens who are in the foster care system. Classes begin on June 15 at the Wesley House Family Services’ Key Largo office, 99451 Overseas Highway, Suite. 200, and will be held for eight weeks, from 6 to 9 p.m. Registration is required. The class uses the Creating and Retaining Excellence (C.A.R.E.) curriculum. There is a great need for foster parents in the Upper Keys. If people can offer love and support to a child, they can be a foster parent. The premier attraction at Key West’s Shipwreck Museum is the salvaged cargo of the Isaac Allerton. The square-rigged merchant ship of 594 tons measured 137.2 feet in length, was built with two decks, and sold at auction on Jan. 19, 1839. Henry F. Jackson of Plymouth, Massachusetts, purchased the ship and christened it the Isaac Allerton.
