(WBBM NEWSROOM) — The city rolled out its community safety plan for the "holiday weekend" during a news conference at the Chicago Cultural Center this afternoon.

The strategy includes an intentional effort to limit the amount of CPD overtime and canceled days off.

“Look, we're dealing with human beings here who have families. You know, they have sick family members, people that they have to take care of,” Police superintendent Larry Snelling said.

“We can't just, you know, blindly cancel days off and expect people to show up to work ,and work the way we would like to see them work.”

He also spoke about the importance of time off for officers.

“Right now, overtime and days off cancellations, they're way down from where they were last year. So we would just wanna make sure that we're respectful of the officers, their families, their schedules, their children and things that they planned with their children and families.”

Mayor Johnson says there have been discussions about a possible teen curfew over the summer, but nothing has been finalized at this point.
