Basketball star Angel Reese has been confirmed as a member of the DC Power Football Club ownership group, a women's soccer team set to play in the newly founded USL Super League (USLS).

The Chicago Sky rookie continues to make a positive impact on women's basketball , but the 22-year-old wants to extend that responsibility across all sports, starting with soccer. From the Baltimore area, DC Power FC was an obvious choice for Reese , who was keen to become part of an ownership group.

DC Power will be one of eight teams that feature in the inaugural USLS season, with play expected to start in August 2024. Just like the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), it's been granted Division I status by U.S. Soccer, placing it at the same level on the American soccer pyramid.

"I've always wanted to impact sports, not just women's basketball," Reese said Tuesday when she was announced as the first member of the ownership group. "I've always said I wanted to have part ownership of something.

"Obviously, basketball is my main thing, but growing up in the DMV area, I've loved sports, always, so being able to be a part of the Power FC soccer (team) is going to be so cool. I'm invested in soccer. A lot of my friends play soccer as well. I'm super excited for this partnership, and a lot of young Black women don't have these opportunities."

But this may be the start of a business venture for Reese, as she also revealed her desire to own her own WNBA team. "I know a lot more women are going to start owning more things," Reese added. "Hopefully, one day I can own my own team. That's what I'm looking forward to. I want to own a WNBA team as well."

Unlike the NWSL, which follows the same season format as Major League Soccer, the USLS will adopt a more European schedule. The NWSL and MLS regular seasons run from March to November before a playoff tournament crowns the eventual champions.

The USLS season will run from fall to summer, similar to the European schedule, and the league will consider the women's international soccer calendar while also having a mid-season break to avoid harsh weather over the winter. A college draft will also not be used by the league.

The DC Power ownership group also includes Jordan Stuart, a minority owner of Loudoun United FC, Devin Talbott, a part owner of D.C. United, and Jan Adams. Jason Levien, CEO and managing general owner of MLS team D.C. United, welcomed Reese in a statement.

"Angel's decision to be a founding investor alongside us in Power FC is groundbreaking," Levien said. "As a Maryland native, Angel is so passionate about being a catalyst for positive change in women's sports in the DMV as well as globally while inspiring the next generation of female athletes. We're looking forward to her partnership in the boardroom as an equity partner."

DC Power will be a founding member of the USLS alongside Brooklyn FC, Carolina Ascent FC, Dallas Trinity FC, Fort Lauderdale United FC, Lexington SC, Spokane Zephyr FC, and Tampa Bay Sun FC.
