To the surprise of many, the Chicago White Sox chose Garrett Crochet as their Opening Day starter for the 2024 season. The decision has paid dividends through the first third of the season, as the lefty is blossoming as a starter. After missing the 2022 season and most of 2023, he has finally carved out a role since the White Sox drafted him 11th overall in 2020.

Crochet earned the win in his 11th start Tuesday night, blanking the Toronto Blue Jays over six innings . He surrendered just two hits and a walk while fanning four en route to the South Siders' first win in four games. The win snapped Chicago’s eight-game losing streak against the Blue Jays dating back to June 2022.

Crochet's six shutout frames lowered his season ERA to 3.75 while setting a career-high in innings pitched at 57.2. He hasn't allowed a run in his last 19 innings.

    Korey and Corey

The Pale Hose staked their big lefty to an early lead with a run in the second inning. Korey Lee reached first on third baseman Ernie Clement’s throwing error and advanced to second on Zach Remillard’s sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Nicky Lopez’s base hit and an off-target throw home by Davis Schneider allowed Lee to slide past Danny Jansen.

In the third, the White Sox rallied for two more runs thanks to a clutch hit from Corey Julks. Andrew Vaughn walked and Eloy Jimenez ripped a double before Yusei Kikuchi fanned Paul DeJong for the second out. Julks, starting in leftfield for struggling starter Andrew Benintendi, then delivered a two-run single.

Danny Mendick came up with another big two-out hit in the eighth. Paul DeJong singled to lead off the inning, and pinch-hitter Dominic Fletcher walked with two outs. Mendick then belted a double off the top of the left field wall to put the Sox ahead 5-0.

    Big Relief

The White Sox' relief crew had a tough afternoon in Monday's series opener, allowing four runs in two innings in a six-run loss . Tuesday’s performance by the bullpen was a night-and-day difference.

John Brebbia pitched a perfect seventh, inducing three lineouts. Jordan Leasure and Michael Kopech dominated Blue Jays hitters, retiring them in order with five pinchouts. Kopech struck out the side in the ninth in a non-save situation to lock in the win.

    News and Notes

Eloy Jimenez tweaked his hamstring scoring on Julks’s two-run single. He exited the game and will be further evaluated.

Manager Pedro Grifol confirmed postgame the White Sox will call up Nick Nastrini, who will start on Wednesday. Mike Clevinger's start will be pushed back to Thursday.

Per Grifol, Luis Robert Jr. will play five innings in the Arizona Complex League on Wednesday and this weekend ahead of his rehab assignment.
