(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A ribbon cutting ceremony was held for a new affordable housing apartment building in Humboldt Park on Friday.

The nine story building at at Division Street and California Avenue will include 64 apartments ranging from one to three bedroom units. The $40 million project also features an exercise room, terrace, heated parking garage, laundry facilities and bike rooms.

Ald. Jesse Fuentes (26th) spoke at the event and said the building gives her residents who are pressured by gentrification in their neighborhood, a safe space to live.

“Families in the 26th ward and every ward across the city of Chicago deserve to feel secure and never worry if a roof over their head can be taken away,” Fuentes

The building is dedicated to Pedro Albizu Campos, the outspoken Puerto Rican historical figure who was an attorney and politician.

The section of Division Street that the building is on is designated as the Puerto Rican cultural boulevard.
