CHICAGO — WGN Reporter Mike Lowe has revealed he is battling colon cancer.

In a post shared to Instagram Thursday, Lowe said he was diagnosed with stage 3(c)/N+ colon cancer and is participating in a clinical trial with Northwestern Medicine.

He will be undergoing radiation and chemotherapy for abour six months prior to surgery. Lowe said he won’t be on-air as much during this time, but will be providing health updates on his Instagram.

Lowe notes that colon cancer is rising rapidly in younger people and how important it is to get your colonoscopy. He said he hasn’t even reached the age of a recommended routine screening, which is 45.

The reporter said that he has a great team of doctors and is staying 100 percent positive.

“Meantime, I’m going to start making plans to see the Bears in next year’s Super Bowl,” Lowe concluded.

Cancer sucks, but it’s growing on me.

I wanted to let you know that I was diagnosed with Stage 3(c)/N+ colon cancer, and I’ll be participating in a clinical trial with Northwestern Medicine. I’ll be undergoing radiation and chemotherapy for about six months prior to surgery.

Stage 3 is serious (Chadwick Boseman, the actor who played the title character in “Black Panther” died from Stage 3 colon cancer), but I’m staying 100 percent positive. I’ve got a great team of doctors, all of whom say this could be a curable cancer.

I’ll be motivated by Walter Payton’s motto “Never Die Easy.”

You won’t see me on air as much for a while, but I’ll provide health updates on this page periodically.

It’s worth noting that colon cancer is rising rapidly in younger people (20s, 30s, and 40s). While scientists search for the reason behind the alarming increases, there’s something you can do: get your colonoscopy. I haven’t even reached the age recommended for a routine screening, which is 45. So if you’re experiencing symptoms like constipation or abdominal pain, go see a doctor.

By the way, if you have to be diagnosed with cancer, I’d totally recommend having Peter Lee there with you. If he’s not available, you could always ask your own best friend.

I’m going to be OK, and I’ll see you soon. Meantime, I’m going to start making plans to see the Bears in next year’s Super Bowl.
