CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Regular Chicago drivers will nod in agreement with a new report that places the city among the worst commutes in the country.

On average, Chicago drivers spend more time in traffic than in any of the other 47 largest cities in the country. That's the finding from a new report from Forbes Advisor .

The survey looked at factors such as safety, the cost of car ownership and overall driving experience to determine Chicago is the seventh-worst city to drive in overall.

With rush hour speeds averaging only 18 mph, local drivers lose a total of 155 hours per year sitting in traffic.

The report cited those rush hour speeds and hours in traffic as one of the key reasons that Chicago drivers spend more money on gas than those in any other city, averaging over $2,600 annually.

Forbes Advisor said relief can be found in North Carolina, with Raleigh and Charlotte being two of the best cities to drive in.
