The Chicago Blackhawks addressed another offseason order of business on Tuesday by signing Lukas Reichel to a two-year contract extension. The pact carries a $1.2 million salary-cap hit and runs through the 2025-26 season.

This agreement represents good value for the Blackhawks and some stability for Reichel, who entered the offseason as a restricted free agent.

The German forward endured an underwhelming 2023-24 season as he posted just 16 points (five goals, 11 assists) in 65 games. A former first-round pick, Reichel was expected to make a jump in an elevated role on a talent-thin Blackhawks team. However, on-ice struggles and confidence issues resulted in lackluster production, demotions within the lineup, and eventually a stint with the AHL's Rockford IceHogs .

Luckily, time is on the Blackhawks' side as they continue their rebuilding process. General manager Kyle Davidson wants to see on-ice improvement next year, but Chicago likely won't be competing for a playoff spot.

Now locked up for two more seasons at a reasonable price tag, Reichel has an opportunity to make strides in his development and cement himself as a piece of the next competitive Blackhawks team.

If he does so, a more handsome payday will be in the cards two years down the road. If he doesn't, the Blackhawks can move on and allocate resources to other players in their prospect pool or free agents.
