(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Friends and family gathered on the Southwest Side Monday morning to remember fallen Chicago Police Officer Luis Huesca.

The six-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department was laid to rest with full honors as loved ones said goodbye.

Supt. Larry Snelling described Officers Huesca as the very best of the Chicago Police Department.

“He was serving our city because he believed in justice for the most vulnerable,” Snelling said. “He always led with professionalism and respect, because that is who his mother Edith Huesca raised him to be.”

The superintendent said Huesca’s family described him as a protective spirit.

“His sister Liliana and his brother Emiliano Jr. always admired their younger brother’s moral compass that led him to stand up for those who needed help,” Snelling said. “It’s because, at his core, he was a great man.”

At the family’s request, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson was not in attendance. In a statement, he said he continues to send his deepest condolences “to the family and colleagues of Officer Luis Huesca as they heal from the loss of their beloved son, nephew, brother and friend.”

Huesca was shot and killed while heading home from work on April 21. He would've turned 31 years old last week.

A manhunt is currently underway for an Aurora man who has been charged with first-degree murder over Huesca's death.
