CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Families who have children with disabilities can now apply for help from a $5 million fund that the city of Chicago formally launched on Tuesday.

Jamal Malone, CEO of Ada S. McKinley Community Services, said his agency has partnered with the city of Chicago to provide support for students with disabilities.

“With the Diverse Learners Recovery Fund, we are working with about 8,000 students across Chicago and providing grants of $500 grants to each family,” he said.

At a facility run by Ada S. McKinley Community Services, Mayor Brandon Johnson said the city is using $5 million in federal COVID relief money to fuel the Diverse Learners Recovery Fund.

“It is our hope that this cash assistance program will help families and students with their lifelong learning and their overall growth,” Johnson said.

Cheryl Smith, from Englewood, was at the Ada S. McKinley operation at Wabash Avenue and 18th Street to apply. She was hoping for help for her 11-year-old son. Smith said the money might help her buy headphones to block out the loud noises that bother him so much.

“It’s not only a physical disability; sometimes it’s a behavioral disability,” she said. “People have to understand that.”

Sherry Henry was also at the South Loop building to apply for the lottery. She said her son has autism.

Henry said she makes many sacrifices to care for her son, and any financial help is welcome. She added that her efforts have paid off.

“I’ve raised a great child,” said Henry. “I’m so proud of [him]. He’s proud of himself. He’s getting great grades, but it’s a challenge.”

Those who are interested in applying for the grant may do so online .
