CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — On Tuesday, the Johnson administration will kick off a grant program to help families that have children with disabilities. It is the result of a public-private partnership.

There will be a lottery program to award $500, one-time grants to the families of low-income students with disabilities. Curt Holderfield, a senior vice president for Ada S. McKinley Community Services said his agency is working with the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities.

“If awarded, you’ll receive the $500 cash grant award,” he said. “It’s non-restrictive, so they can spend it on housing costs, food and groceries, pay bills, or they can spend it on extra services for their child: mentoring, tutoring, [or] after-school programs.”

The idea is to allow families to spend the money “where it’s needed most,” Holderfield said.

“When I think about … that $500, it’s not just a single program, but it’s a series of programs,” he said.

Holderfield added that if families need advice on how to spend the money wisely, help is available.

“This is not an application and a website that people go to, so, again, we have staff that will be reaching out and actually talking to families,”

Applications for the $500 grant can be made online .

“The site is live; it is up and running. We put forth a small pilot program to make sure that everything was working right, and we’ve been live for the last couple of weeks.”

WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore talks about helping students with disabilities on Sunday’s “At Issue” program. You can hear more of the discussion at 9:30 p.m. live on WBBM Newsradio .
