CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A new report details that Dexter Reed had been shot by a relative well before he was killed by Chicago police last month.

It happened two and a half years ago.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that in August of 2021 Reed attacked his uncle  with a kitchen knife while threatening to kill him.

The paper cited police reports that said the uncle shot Reed in the back and groin during the altercation in the family’s home. Reed was in a coma for weeks and struggled both mentally and physically afterward.

The paper said he filed a handful of lawsuits after the shooting, including one in which he said, “I’m physically disabled and mentally unstable with PTSD, short memory-loss, slurred speech.”

Weeks before he died in a shootout with police, Reed posted to Facebook, “Sometimes I feel like giving up but I’m living for me.”

When the 26-year-old got into a shootout with police, he was facing gun charges for allegedly trying to bring a weapon into the Windy City Smokeout music fest last summer.
