CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Deondre Thorne, 36, was awaiting his next court appearance Tuesday after being arraigned Tuesday morning in connection with a deadly shooting at a Chesapeake gas station May 5.

Police say Thorne was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Thorne drove away before officers arrived, police say. According to court records, he was booked the following day.

Jonte Wilson, a 36-year-old man from Hampton, was found shot at the Exxon gas station across from the Hampton Roads Executive Airport, according to police. Police say Wilson died at the gas station.

On a post about Thorne being charged on the Chesapeake Police Department’s Facebook page, multiple people commented the shooting was self-defense.

When News 3 asked Tuesday if the shooting was being investigated as self-defense, a spokesperson for the police department said the investigation was ongoing, including what led to the shooting.

They also said police were not looking for anyone else and there was no threat to the public.

Tuesday, News 3 went to the courthouse in Chesapeake to look for court documents related to this case. What was available, however, didn’t reveal any new information.

News 3 also called multiple possible family members of Wilson, but none answered.

There was no sign of any memorial at the gas station Tuesday.
