WISE COUNTY, Va. (WJHL) – University of Virginia’s College at Wise (UVA-Wise) hosted its 14th annual Day of Service event on Saturday.

After kicking off with a traditional breakfast, volunteers participated in work that benefitted the people and pets of the community, according to a release from the college.

“Committing to serving the community is one of the many ways that students can forge new connections and gain new skills or perspectives during their time at UVA-Wise,” said UVA Wise Assistant Dean of Students Nicole Honeysett. “Participating in community service is not just a way to support others, it allows students to become better global citizens and grow skills that will be useful beyond their time as students.”

The day consisted of the following, provided by the release:

    • Pet Blankets -Volunteers made fleece pet blankets for the Wise County Animal Shelter.
    • Wise Primary School – Volunteers helped paint, organize supplies and work on other maintenance projects at Wise Primary School.
    • L.F. Addington Middle School -Volunteers helped clean, organize supplies and work on other maintenance projects at L.F. Addington.
    • Campus Shoebox Campaign -Volunteers worked on a variety of projects to support the Campus Shoebox Campaign for needy children all over the world.
    • The Big Glades -The Student Government Association members beautified the Big Glades in Wise County.
    • Lonesome Pine Library -Volunteers assisted the Lonesome Pine Library with various projects inside and outside the library in Wise County.

“Community Service provides students with opportunities to network, gain tangible skills and experience, as well as have a positive impact on our local community,” Honeysett said.

The UVA-Wise-sponsored volunteer event began in 2011 when UVA Wise and the University of Virginia joined together to honor the inauguration of then-UVA president, Teresa A. Sullivan, the release said.
