CENTREVILLE — Saturday afternoon, May 11, the Queen Anne’s County Animal Services hosted their second annual volunteer celebration. The event was held again at Conquest Beach Park, just north of Centreville.

Volunteer Coordinator Sarah Rondeau welcomed all who attended, thanking them for their service to the homeless animals the facility works very hard to find loving, forever homes for. Rondeau said, “You are people who are truly special. You share love with these animals that makes a difference. You’re more than volunteers — you’re heroes!”

She was followed by Director Kelly Hamilton, who added, “We’re also recognizing those who volunteer to provide foster care for these animals while we look for permanent loving homes. Last year, 390 animals were fostered. You took the pets home with you, some only for a weekend, as time would permit you to do. But, that time was well invested in each animal to keep them socially working with people until we could find them a home. Thank you, again!”

Adoption and Foster Coordinator Sara Taylor was also present at the event Saturday, and played an essential role in helping find foster care homes last year.

The first ever “Paws for Heroes” Spotlight Award, was presented to QA Sheriff’s Office Sgt. George Sewell for his continued work with animals, particularly dogs. Sheriff Gary Hofmann submitted Sewell’s name to the Animal Services facility to be recognized.

“The intention is to recognize someone in our county each month for this award,” said Hamilton. “If you know someone who is deserving, please contact Sarah Rondeau with your recommendation.”

The volunteers who attended the appreciation were provided a catered lunch, music, games and encouragement to continue their good works.
