CENTREVILLE- Parking spaces have been an ongoing discussion for the Centreville Town Council particularly, for neighboring areas directly across from the town hall building that increase difficulties in parking and leaving the town hall area safely April 18.

To increase parking visibility and alleviate safety concerns, the council considered a resolution to remove four parking spaces from the east side of Liberty Street in front of 100 Courthouse Square.

The council discussed town parking and potentially eliminating spaces that potentially pose a danger due to visibility for those pulling out and exiting the area.

While there have not been any noted incidents at the intersection as of yet, vehicles parked at the spaces on the opposite side of the street from Town Hall “make it difficult for anyone doing business with Town Hall and attempting to leave to do so safely,” Council President Ashley Kaiser said..

Kaiser has been an advocate for traffic safety “and I definitely don’t want people to come to pay their water bill and then not be able to see to leave,” she said.

Council Member Daniel Worth noted establishing a resolution could open doors and set a precedent for more requests for parking restrictions and that the town needed all the parking spots available it could get.

Kaiser agreed parking availability in town was important.

Council member Jim Beauchamp suggested a trial run of temporarily closing the end parking spot while leaving the other three or four spaces open.

Worth suggested a general policy of no parking within a certain feet of a corner, similar to the current state law designating no parking 30 feet from the stop sign.

The council reached a consensus to consider bringing the topic back for further discussion.

In other business it was noted, plans by the State Highway Administration to repave the stretch from Gravel Run Bridge to Wexford Drive/ Spaniard Neck Road is scheduled by the end of June weather permitting.
