Local feline rescue uses new facility for first time

CENTER POINT, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Big day for the Exotic Feline Rescue Center as they use their new vet clinic for the first time.

The Peter Emily Foundation and students from Illinois University came to the center Sunday to perform dental surgery on some of the felines. The new facility was opened back in March of this year.

When felines get hungry or bored, they tend to pull on their wired enclosures which causes their teeth to break off and get infected. When this happens it can be very painful for the felines. The dentists come in twice a year to perform root canal surgeries to restore the teeth back to its original function.

Veterinary Dentist with the Peter Emily Foundation Clarence Sitzman says the new facility makes it more comfortable for them and the felines.

“Been coming here twice a year for 10 years. And the other facility they had was basically the basement of Joe’s (owner) house,” Sitzman said.

Sitzman said its been a honor working with the animals at the Exotic Feline Rescue Center.

“How many people in the world can say that I’m going to the sanctuary to do dental work on tigers? You know and it’s like not very many of us can say that. So, it’s kind of a privilege to be able to do that. This facility especially, such a great new facility and it’s really neat being the first ones that have worked here,” he said.
