Beloit Sky Carp split twinbill with Cedar Rapids Kernels

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A rainy start to the season coupled with a wet week in Iowa led to the Beloit Sky Carp splitting a pair of twinbills against the Cedar Rapids Kernels, who finished the week 4-2 in what was originally a seven-game series that was instead shortened to six.

The two squads split a doubleheader on Thursday, where the nightcap was a makeup from April 7th’s rainout in Beloit, before Friday’s game was rained out and moved to a doubleheader on Saturday. Once again, each team took one game in the twofer before Sunday’s game was canceled due to rain.

After Beloit fell 4-2 in game one on Thursday, it won the nightcap 8-1 and carried the momentum in the first game on Saturday with a 9-4 victory.

Johnny Olmstead got the game started with a triple and scored on Jake Thompson’s groundout to short. Cappe, who had walked, stole second and moved to third on the RBI grounder, scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.

Misael Urbina’s solo homer in the third cut it to 2-1 and Rubel Cespedes’ RBI single in the sixth tied it up and sent it into extra innings (doubleheaders are seven innings each).

Cappe and Josh Zamora each blasted a two-run homer while Chase Luttrell smacked a one-run triple in a wild eight-run eighth inning for the Sky Carp.

A pair of RBI doubles by Agustin Ruiz and Cespedes in the bottom of the eighth weren’t enough to bring the Kernels back.

Cappe, Thompson and Jake DeLeo each had two hits for Beloit while Cespedes led Cedar Rapids with two.

Karson Milbrandt pitched five strong innings as he allowed two earned runs on two hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts.

Evan Taylor allowed two hits but no runs in 1 2-3 innings while Josh White threw the eighth and allowed three hits and two runs (one earned).

    • GAME TWO: The Sky Carp took a 1-0 lead in the second after DeLeo tripled and scored on Luttrell’s sacrifice fly before Cedar Rapids answered with eight unanswered runs to win the nightcap 8-1.

DeLeo had two hits for Beloit, which was outhit 10-5 and committed two errors.

Cedar Rapids scored three runs in the second and five in the sixth as Joe Garry Jr. went 2-for-3 with three RBI while Jay Harry and Ricardo Olivar each added a pair of hits.

Ike Buxton took the loss for the Sky Carp as he allowed three earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts in four innings. Tyler Eckberg threw a hitless fifth.

Darren Bowen threw five strong innings for the Kernels as he allowed just three hits and three walks while striking out four in five innings. Ricardo Velez earned the save as he allowed just two hits in two innings.
