Pinevale Elementary awarded $10K in grants
VALDOSTA – Valdosta City Schools congratulates Pinevale Elementary School for being awarded $10,000 from two distinguished grants. Congratulations to our media specialist, Kimberly Knight, for receiving two distinguished grants: the Beyond Words Grant from The Dollar General Literacy Foundation and a grant from the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries! She looks forward to using the funds to purchase new books to promote literacy and make the library a place where students become more inspired and engaged in learning.

GBI Leads Investigation into Fatal Shooting of Timothy Hunt in Lanier County, Calls for Public Assistance
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken the reins in the case of Timothy Hunt, a 27-year-old man from Naylor, Georgia, who suffered a fatal gunshot in Lanier County. Hunt’s life came to an abrupt end at a residence on Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., Lakeland, on June 2, prompting local law enforcement to seek assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. As reported by Georgia Bureau of Investigation, a medical examiner is scheduled to conduct an autopsy to uncover more about the events leading to Hunt’s death.
Valdosta State Football hosts annual titletown showcase
VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - On Friday morning over 350 participants showed up to Valdosta State football’s practice field for the annual Titletown Showcase. The showcase open to current high school football players and transfers looking for their next home. All positions got a chance to show of their talent in front of some college scouts. The day got started with specialists, followed by linemen and skill positions.
Valdosta teen remains in coma after being hit by car
VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - 17-year-old Javaute Brown remains in a coma after being hit by a car while riding a dirt bike on Tuesday, May 14. WALB was told by the family of Brown that “He is doing much better he’s still in a coma, the bleeding has stopped, they changed his ventilator put in his throat ‚so he came around to talk, eat. But he’s still on a feeding tube everything else he’s slowly pulling through.”
American Legion program prepares young men for leadership
VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - The next generation of government leaders are at one South Georgia university designing a mock state, with a working government. “It’s great to be part of an organization like that. I’ve learned a lot about government in my time here about how elections work, how different officers are elected so it’s an educational experience,” Owen Ogletree, Deputy Director and 8th grader, said.
VCS student transfer request application period now open
VALDOSTA – Valdosta City Schools announces the application period is now open for the HB 251 student transfer request. As the parent or guardian of a student currently enrolled in Valdosta City Schools, we are notifying you of your rights under House Bill 251 (HB 251). This bill provides that students who reside within the Valdosta City Schools’ district may apply to transfer to schools deemed by the district to have adequate, permanent classroom space for the 2024 – 2025 school year. The school district will not provide transportation for students who elect to transfer under HB 251. Transportation will be the responsibility of the parents/guardians.

3 arrested, charged following investigation into an intoxicated infant
TIFTON, Ga. (WALB) - The Tifton Police Department (TPD) arrested three people on Monday, June 3, following an investigation into an incident involving an intoxicated infant. On April 21, TPD was notified by Tift Regional Medical Center that a five-month-old child, who was brought in by its mother, Miranda Anderson, 25, tested for a high level of alcohol in its system, according to TPD.
