    Happening this week in and around Cecil County:

    Gallorette Boutique is part of the Kentucky Derby Party hosted by Fair Hill International and held at the Ed Walls Building on the Cecil County Fairgrounds.

    The first jewel in horse racing’s triple crown comes with lots of traditions, including the wearing of hats or fascinators by the ladies. Gallorette Boutique , 222 Bohemia Avenue in Chesapeake City, offers a colorful selection of the party headgear. Joanne Lund, owner of the shop, is a judge for the contest.

    The Kentucky Derby party is from 4 until 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 4 in the Ed Walls Building.

    There will be opportunities to wager on the derby, plus ride the mechanical bull, enjoy barbecued chicken and play cornhole, among other activities. To get details on tickets and more, go to https://fairhillinternational.org/cart/ .

    Cecil County Public Library Business Information Center is offering a free seminar May 16 presented by the US Small Business Administration.

    This is an Introduction to the Small Business Administration starting at 11 a.m. at the North East Branch Library. John Fleming, SBA Regional Administrator, will give an overview of the agency, its programs and services.

    Cinco de Mayo celebrations begin Friday night in Elkton with First Friday from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m.

    Elkton Alliance still has vendor spaces available in the center of town along Main and North Streets. Call 410-398-5076 for details. Your business can join in the fun, which includes the grand re-opening of The Palette & The Page under its new ownership, Expressions of Healing Opening Reception at Cecil County Arts Council, The Boozy Bard presentation of Romeo & Juliet at Showcase on Main and The Art and Design Student Exhibition Opening Reception at Cecil College on Railroad Avenue.

    Add to that a Cinco de Mayo dance performance by Ballet Mexico Lindo, food and drink specials from downtown restaurants and the weekend of fun begins!

    Oxford Mainstreet also has a full slate of fun to celebrate Cinco de Mayo for its First Friday from 5 until 8 p.m. and Saturday too.

    Merchants in the center of town will offer specials including The Maroon Hornet, who will also celebrate Free Comic Book Day May 4 with a special guest from a galaxy far away. Howett’s Printing is having their spring clearance sale and there’s a gallery opening reception at The Oxford Arts Alliance featuring the work of Hannah Kae Jacobson.

    North East Chamber of Commerce is launching its 2024 season of Second Friday May 10 from 5 until 8 p.m. at various locations along Main Street.

    Spring is Blooming is the theme and businesses are encouraged to freshen up their flower beds and window boxes with spring color. Puppeteer Jack Foreaker will perform on The Green courtesy of John Ford from Integrity Real Estate. Nate Smythe performs on the patio of Snatcher’s Creekside and on the porch of the future North East home of Elk River Brewing, Ted Pugh will perform.

    There will be non-profits, crafters and kids activities also along Main Street. Turkey Point Vineyard is hosting a free wine tasting on The Green as well, and will be selling glasses and bottles of their locally grown and produced wines.

    Future Second Friday themes are Flag Day, Dinner and a Movie, Olympics, a kickoff for football season and Purple Friday.

    Cecil County Health Department is offering low cost rabies vaccines May 4 at Water Witch Fire Company‘s Tome Highway Station in Port Deposit and May 11 at the health department at 401 Bow St. in Elkton from 9 a.m. until noon.

    No walk ins are accepted. Animals must be registered in advance by calling 443-245-3258. Each vaccine is $7 and must be paid by cash or check only.
