Details come out after gunfire, police chase in downtown Redding

A 32-year-old man is in the hospital and facing two counts of attempted murder after leading police on a chase Tuesday night through two cities following a disturbance in which authorities accuse him of shooting at a woman at a Shasta Lake home. The high-speed chase ended at Cypress and Hartnell avenues in Redding after the accused, identified as Reese Colton Churulich, got out of his vehicle and started exchanging gunfire with officers, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday morning. Churulich was wounded and taken into custody before being taken to the hospital, the sheriff’s office said in a news release posted on its Facebook. No officers were injured. The sheriff's office also did not identify the officers involved in the shooting. The woman who was shot was also taken to the hospital for treatment. The sheriff's office did not update her condition. Sheriff’s deputies responded to a house in the 3000 block of Los Gatos Avenue in Shasta Lake just before 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, for a report of a gunshot victim. Where Redding, Shasta County races stand after new vote totals

Challenger Mike Gallagher grew his lead over incumbent Chris Kelstrom in the Shasta County Board of Supervisors District 5 race. Gallagher has 58.2% of the vote while Kelstrom has 41.8%, according to the latest vote totals released Thursday afternoon, Nov. 5, by the elections office. Meanwhile, not much changed in the race for three seats on the Redding City Council. Russ Wenham continues to be the front-runner with 21.9% of the vote. He is followed closely by incumbent Tenessa Audette, who has 19.4% of the vote. Mark Mezzano, who served on the Redding City Council from 2020 to 2024, maintained his hold on third place with 14.6% of the vote. In fourth place is Redding businesswoman Christina Prosperi with 12.9%. The results below will be updated as the California Secretary of State and the Shasta County Elections Office releases new vote totals. Problems At The Shasta County Elections Officer Delay Results From Tuesday’s Election

All indications are that Shasta County voters turned out in high numbers. One unofficial clue is that the ballot drop box in the roundabout in front of Redding City Hall was busy all day, with a constant line of people waiting to cast their votes. There were problems at the Elections Office including a delay because Registrar Clint Curtis had to do what he called a “Zero Report” before workers could start feeding ballots into the counting machines. There was also a mix-up of mail-in ballots and in-person ballots that had to be straightened up. The actual counting process did not get underway until hours later than planned and no results were posted until very late Tuesday night.

Shasta clerk may run in Redding race that county left off ballot

Redding voters will head back to the polls on March 2, 2027, after the Shasta County Elections Office left off the November general election ballot an uncontested race for city clerk. And the incumbent, Sharlene Tipton, who was in an uncontested race this year could have some competition next year. Shasta County Registrar of Voters Clint Curtis told a Record Searchlight reporter on Thursday, Nov. 5, that he is seriously considering running. "I might run against her," said Curtis, who failed in his bid to retain his post as the county's top election official when he lost to former Shasta County Registrar of Voters Joanna Francescut in June. Francescut starts in January. Curtis said that Tipton should be the one saying she doesn't want a special election because "it's the most wasteful thing they could do. ... So it's a vanity race and so they are going to waste a 100,000-plus dollars on a vanity race." But it's not Tipton's decision.
