Milwaukee-based developer Wire Capital Group, breaks ground on Maritime Lofts site in Manitowoc
On Thursday, August 27, 2026, Wire Capital Group broke ground on the future site of the Maritime Lofts on the long-vacant former Mirro Aluminum site. The former aluminum cookware plant was torn down in 2017 and the site at 1512 Washington Street has sat empty ever since. That was until January 2022, when Wire Capital Group, a Milwaukee-based, Black founded and owned developer placed and won a bid with the city of Manitowoc to develop the Former Mirro Cookware site into affordable housing on the south side of the vacant property. The city sold the site to Wire Capital Group for $1, because the site was declared a contamination site by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

We Energies plans new natural gas plant as data centers drive demand
We Energies wants to build another natural gas-fired power plant, this time in the Fox Valley's Outagamie County. The Milwaukee-based utility filed preliminary engineering plans for a 750-megawatt natural gas plant in Wrightstown, on the site of the existing Fox Energy Center owned by Wisconsin Public Service Corp. We Energies did not say whether the project, called Fox North Energy Center, is intended to serve the artificial intelligence data centers driving a massive build-out of new power generation across Wisconsin. Two of the utility’s pending natural gas plant proposals – 1.2 gigawatts in Kenosha County and 324 megawatts in Walworth County – will help power data center campuses in Mount Pleasant and Port Washington. If approved by the state Public Service Commission, Fox North is projected to come online in late 2032 and run continuously with a lifetime of at least 30 years. We Energies expects to begin construction in 2029. "The Fox North Energy Center will help meet Wisconsin's growing energy needs and strengthen grid reliability across the region," We Energies spokesperson Brendan Conway said, in an Oct. 2 statement. More information about the project, including cost estimates, "will be provided through regulatory filings in the coming months," he

'Pretty excited' in Allouez as construction starts at Webster Ave. site
Alloueznians ' years-long wait for work to start on a long-vacant South Webster Avenue site is over and the community quickly took notice. The first heavy construction equipment arrived at 1905 S. Webster Ave. in late September to begin earth work required to prepare a key site in the Allouez for construction of a new, mixed-use development. "We've been getting a lot of calls and excitement from community members," said Trevor Fuller, Allouez's director of planning and community development. "Everyone – staff, elected officials and the community in general – are all pretty excited to see the development move forward." The site had become a bit of a saga in Allouez. The property's location on the corner of Webster and St. Joseph Street puts it in the core of Allouez's village center development area. The village bought it in 2020 and demolished the structure in 2023 while courting developers to activate the prominent site at the core of its " village center " vision. Two proposals didn't work out before the village and Allouez Development Group LLC in fall 2025 reached an agreement on a mixed-use plan. The project also will incorporate new sidewalk designs and streetside improvements that offer

A new coffee drive-through, a bank branch and more
Welcome to the Streetwise Newsletter, where the news comes to you! This week’s newsletter starts with the story about 7 Brew, a drive-thru coffee business opening its third location in the Green Bay area. Another outside-the-area company is expanding, opening a second location in Hobart. Stephenson National Bank & Trust, headquartered in Marinette, broke ground on a new facility that is expected to open in 2027. Often, I receive questions in my mail asking about what’s being built here or there. Just a few weeks back, a reader asked what was being built on Allouez Avenue next to ReStore. I found out that Detrie Builders Inc., a 71-year-old company based in Green Bay, is building its main offices in Bellevue and moving next year. Changing gears to the nonprofit and animal world – last week, I wrote a story about Safe Haven Pet Sanctuary finding a new home for its kittens. The organization had been operating out of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church since June 24, after torrential rains collapsed the roof of the building at 151 N. Broadway in west Green Bay. Finally, I want to share the story about Dylan Diersen, the new owner of the Cock &
