CARY, N.C. (WNCT) — Being eight years old and developing as a baseball player wasn’t the challenge Coach Shannon Stokes gave his oldest player, Deacon Whaley.

“Deacon is my leader,” said Stokes.

Stokes, head coach of TLP 8U travel baseball team, said when Whaley joined the team last season, he was the oldest of the group and he was quickly assigned leadership responsibility.

“His challenge has always been ‘OK, you’re 8, this is your team’,” said Stokes. Whaley handles the leadership role well as his younger teammates look to him for guidance.

Whaley enjoys having fun on the field with his team and getting wins.
