Saigon Alley Vietnamese restaurant temporarily closes in Sacramento's midtown
A popular Vietnamese restaurant in midtown Sacramento has temporarily closed. Saigon Alley Kitchen + Bar at 1801 L St. closed after service on Sunday, Oct. 18, for renovations, owner Mymy Nguyen confirmed. In a statement to The Bee, Nguyen wrote that the renovations will include “touch-ups on deep cleaning and upholstery and work on the front patio.” Nguyen did not say how long the temporary closure would be. During the time the restaurant is closed, a new brunch menu will be put in place, Nguyen said. Popular for its pho, garlic noodles and banh mi tacos and full cocktail menu, Saigon Alley opened in 2020. The restaurant expanded to Natomas Boulevard in Natomas and Folsom’s Broadstone Marketplace, but both locations were permanently closed. The restaurant served staple Vietnamese dishes with sharable family-sized portions. It also served a 72-hour bone broth pho and Wagyu pho.

Mt. Shasta Ski Park targets December opening as El Niño winter nears
The strong El Niño being forecast for far Northern California could bring a warmer and wetter season than usual this winter, just as Mt. Shasta Ski Park prepares to open around the holidays for what employees hope will be a busy time. "Everyone's talking about this super El Niño, and we're hopeful it delivers a big winter," ski park spokeswoman Grace Hornbeak said in a news release. "But we didn't want to count on it. Our crew put in a summer of hard work so we can open on less snow and keep runs open longer, whatever this winter brings." Crews cleared brush and cut tree stumps across its runs. The work means the runs will need less snow to open safely, giving skiers potentially more days on the slopes if early-season snow is light, Hornbeak said. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's winter outlook, released on Oct. 15, shows more precipitation, but whether that means more snowfall and a fluffy, white blanket for skiers, is not yet known. But Hornbeak said the park is optimistic that the El Niño conditions will bring plenty of snow to the 2026-27 ski season. The ski park is targeting a mid-December opening. Lack

Dead rat in a glue trap, rodent droppings found at this Land Park eatery. What else?
Sacramento County Health Inspectors gave a red placard to the Land Park eatery after finding a dead rat and rodent droppings in the facility. What do these inspections mean? While a yellow placard signals two or more major violations, these are typically corrected or mitigated during the inspection, according to the Sacramento County Retail Food Inspection Guide . A red placard, however, signals “imminent danger to public health and safety” and suspends an establishment’s health permit until violations are corrected. This could include, but is not limited to, major vermin contamination. In contrast, a green placard means a restaurant passed inspection. The county performs about 14,000 inspections annually and about 97% of establishments pass, spokesman Ken Casparis previously told The Sacramento Bee. Approximately 1% of inspections result in a closure, he said. These were the results of Sacramento County food facility inspections for Thursday, Oct. 8, through Wednesday, Oct. 14. If an inspection listed below needs clarification, business owners can email The Sacramento Bee at servicejournalists@sacbee.com . How to report a business to the health department For readers who would like to report a local restaurant, food truck or café for health violations, you can file a complaint with the

Downtown Sacramento Mexican restaurant known for its birria tacos to close
A Mexican restaurant frequented by state workers and Sacramento residents alike is closing for good. Thirtyfour Mexican Cantina on 1100 O St. announced earlier this month on social media that it would be shutting down Oct. 23. “We’ve had the privilege of sharing countless meals, laughter, and special memories with you — memories we will carry with us forever,” the restaurant wrote in its farewell post on social media. The cantina served Sacramento for three-and-a-half years and was known for birria tacos, fish tacos, birria ramen and quesabirria tacos. The eatery came about as a result of an expansion of Tacos 34, a pop-up taco vendor in Sacramento. The name is dedicated to 34th Avenue in North Oak Park, where the owners grew up, according to previous Sacramento Bee reporting. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Thirtyfour Mexican Cantina (@thirtyfourmexicancantina) Thirtyfour Mexican Cantina did not respond to an interview request from The Sacramento Bee in time for publication. In its goodbye announcement, co-owners Evaleen Nambo and Serapio Nambo thanked customers for their support. ‘Saying goodbyes is not easy, but we leave with hearts full of gratitude,” they wrote.
