    This Week in Eddy County Sports: Eddy County baseball and softball host playoffs

    Playoff time for baseball and softball is here as Carlsbad and Artesia host first-round games on the road to a state championship.

    Cavemen baseball team faces familiar opponent

    At 4:30 p.m. Friday at Carlsbad High School, the Cavemen host Las Cruces Centennial in the opening round of the 5A playoffs.

    The weekend series is best two-out-of-three as Carlsbad is the No. 7 seed and Centennial is the No. 10 seed.

    At 11 a.m. Saturday at Carlsbad High School, both teams square off in the second game. The squads faced each other in March in Carlsbad as the Cavemen won the doubleheader.

    The Cavemen won the District 5-4A regular season title. Albuquerque La Cueva is the No. 1 seed in the 5A tournament.

    Cavegirls host Los Lunas in softball opening round

    At 6 p.m. Friday at Carlsbad High School, the Cavegirls face the Tigers as the winner advances to the second round.

    The Cavegirls are the No. 6 seed in the tournament and Los Lunas is the No. 11 seed. The game is single elimination.

    Carlsbad finished second in District 5-4A and ended the regular season with a split against Hobbs.

    Golf team prepares for state

    At 9 a.m. Tuesday in Roswell, the Carlsbad High School golfers participate in the district championships at the New Mexico Military Institute Golf Course.

    Track and field travels for district meet

    At 3 p.m. Friday in Roswell, the Carlsbad track and field teams participate in the District 5-4A meet.

    The state championship is set for next week in Albuquerque.

    Loving Falcons baseball has first-round bye

    The Falcons enter the state tournament as the No. 2 seed in 2A and face either Rehoboth Christian or Laguna Acoma in next week’s quarterfinals.

    Loving track and field heads to state

    Friday and Saturday in Albuquerque, the Falcons participate in the 1A-3A state track and field meet.

    Artesia baseball hosts Santa Teresa in 4A opening round

    At 5 p.m. Friday in Artesia, the Bulldogs host the Desert Warriors in the opening game of a best-of-three series.

    The Bulldogs are the No. 5 seed and Santa Teresa is the No. 12 seed heading into the playoffs.

    Artesia finished second in District 4-4A behind Roswell Goddard, who is the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.

    At 5 p.m. Saturday in Artesia, the No. 5 seed hosts the No. 12 seed Bloomfield in the first round of the 4A playoffs.

    Artesia finished second in District 4-4A behind Lovington.
