Westview High School claimed the CIF-San Diego Section Division I Gymnastics Championships for the third straight year Friday afternoon at La Costa Canyon High School.

    Westview defeated Mt. Carmel 219.575–218.90.

“It’s amazing,” Wolverines head coach Diane Wavrik said after the section finals. “We had a lot of injuries this year we had to overcome, so it was a big surprise for us to be able to do it three years in a row. Super, super amazing.”

This comes after the Sundevils defeated the Wolverines in last week’s Avocado League championship meet.

As a result, Westview had to step it up to claim its third straight section title.

In the optional session, the Wolverines’ best finisher was Bhavaani Nayak, who placed third in beam with a 9.225 score. In addition, Westview’s Mayuri Ishitsuka placed fourth in bars with an 8.925 score.

Bonita Vista’s Mariel Corona, who took home the individual beam title with a 9.550 score, netted 36.5 points to claim the Barons’ first all-around optional title in school history.

Torrey Pines’ Mia Carpenter, who trailed Coronel by 0.4 points, placed second and claimed the Gymnast of the Year honors during the awards presentation.

Granite Hills’ Janelle Martinez, who won the vault and floor titles, placed third in the overall scoring of the optional session, followed by West Hills’ Anika Brakenbury and Torrey Pines’ Georgia Nuzzo. Brakenbury scored 9.025 points to also win the bars title.

Rounding out the top five in team scoring behind Westview and Mt. Carmel were Torrey Pines, Rancho Bernardo and Steele Canyon.

RB’s Kenya Coulter takes home section’s all-round compulsory title

In the compulsory session, Kenya Coulter of Rancho Bernardo took home the all-around title with a score of 38.8, followed by Naomi Tran of Mt. Carmel in second place with 38.375 points and Kaya Nepomuceno of Westview with 38.2 points in third.

“I thought it was almost flawless,” Broncos coach Scott Zimmerman said of Coulter’s 9.825 floor routine, which was her best finish among the four events. “Obviously, there was a bit of detraction, but she did beautifully. ”

In the floor routine, Coulter was the runner-up to Granite Hills’ Skylar Parga, who was last year’s compulsory champion. Coulter became the Broncos’ second all-around compulsory championship and first since Caitlin Tran in 2007.

Nepomuceno recorded the best score on the bars at 9.725. Mt. Carmel’s Cerie Yoo recorded the best score in the vault with a 9.8. Yoo’s teammate, Naomi Tran, led the way on the beam with a 9.95 score, which was the top individual score in any category, compulsory or optional.
