CANTON ‒ A 28-year-old woman could spend the rest of her life in prison for killing a man who lived in the city's southwest section.
On Wednesday, Stark County Common Pleas Judge Natalie R. Haupt gave Chabrijuana J. Glenn a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 23 years for fatally shooting Douglas G. Adkins.
The Akron woman was sentenced after pleading guilty to two counts of aggravated murder, one count of murder, related specifications that a gun was used in the crimes, and tampering with evidence. Charges of aggravated burglary, felonious assault, robbery and related gun specifications were dismissed at the prosecutor's request.
Adkins, 67, was found seriously injured at his home near 18th Street and Cleveland Avenue SW on Dec. 1. He died Dec 5.
Assistant Stark County Prosecutor Kristen Mlinar said the Glenn was intoxicated when she shot Adkins, who knew her brother. Mlinar said the crime was the result of an unfortunate set of circumstances without elaborating on Glenn's motive for killing Adkins.
Mlinar and public defender Tiffany Poirier jointly recommended the sentence imposed by the judge as part of a negotiated plea agreement. The maximum potential sentence was life without parole.
Given the chance to speak on her own behalf, Glenn turned to three of the victim's relatives and said she was sorry for their loss.
No comments were made by Adkins' relatives, although two women grasped each other and sobbed during the sentencing hearing.
Remembering Canton's Douglas Adkins
A large group of Glenn's supporters watched the proceedings in the courtroom.
After his death, Adkins was remembered as a man who loved animals, fishing and playing pool and table tennis.
"He was loved by many," Tonya Love about father after he died.
Adkins' son, Tim Rue, described his father, who had worked as a salesman, as outgoing and caring.
"He would give you the shirt off of his own back," Rue wrote in a text message. "His doors were open to anyone that needed a place to stay. He was a very giving person."
Rue, a Youngstown resident, recalled his father as a ladies' man, pool shark and someone who always had a positive outlook — even on bad days. He said he never saw his father without a smile on his face.
"He had (three) little dogs," Rue wrote. "He liked working on cars and he could walk you through working on one as if he was looking at it right there with you."
