Canton officials are looking to build a new pedestrian bridge across Canton Creek in the city’s Sunnyside community.

On May 2, Canton City Council heard a brief presentation on a potential $810,800 project design services and construction management contract with Practical Design Partners for the Canton Creek pedestrian bridge and sidewalk improvement project.

The council is scheduled to vote on whether to award the contract May 16.

The city was awarded a $2.2 million dollar grant for the design and construction of the Canton Creek pedestrian bridge and sidewalk improvement project by the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget for Improving Neighborhood Outcomes in Disproportionately Impacted Communities.

The project, if approved May 16, would include building the bridge over Canton Creek parallel to the Marietta Road Bridge. According to city documents, the new bridge would provide the Sunnyside area with better pedestrian access over Canton Creek to the Salvation Army and Family Dollar development on the west side of Marietta Road.

In addition to the bridge, a pedestrian crossing with flashing beacons will be installed across Marietta Road at Longview Street, and a sidewalk will be installed along the west side from the Marietta Road and Hickory Flat Highway intersection to the driveway across from Goss Street, according to PCP’s proposal to the city.

This project was identified as a need during the development of the Canton Transportation Master Plan, according to city documents.

The city issued a request for proposals for professional engineering services and construction management for the project in January. On Feb. 6, three proposals were received for review and consideration, and PDP’s proposal was scored the highest in the staff evaluation.

The Canton City Council meets at 6 p.m. May 16 at Canton City Hall, 110 Academy St. Meetings are also livestreamed on the city’s website at https://www.cantonga.gov.
