Republicans received a thumping defeat in the midterm elections. As voters overwhelmingly rejected GOP candidates, they didn't outright repudiate tax policies that have historically been championed by Republicans. While some states passed ballot initiatives to raise taxes, there were several wins for fans of low taxes. Here are some of the notable outcomes from Election Day.

A longtime journalist from northwestern North Carolina is on the verge of unseating one of the state’s most powerful Republican members of Congress. Chuck Hubbard, 64, leads Rep. Virginia Foxx by 99 votes in the 5th Congressional District, according to unofficial returns — close enough to trigger a possible recount. Here are key takeaways: Hubbard is a lifelong resident of the 5th District whose grandfather founded the Wilkes Journal-Patriot, where Hubbard started working at age 8 inserting sections and helping with the mailing. He attends North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church, serves on the boards of Wilkes Recovery Revolution, the Wilkes Child Abuse Prevention Team and the Wilkes Prison Ministry, and is married to Shari, a former state trooper. The couple has three daughters and two grandchildren. With all precincts reporting, Hubbard led Foxx 48.7% to 48.66% in the 5th Congressional District. Foxx, 83, a Republican from Banner Elk, currently chairs the powerful House Committee on Rules and has served in Congress since 2004 after a decade in the state Senate. Hubbard ran unsuccessfully against her in 2022 and 2024 before this third try. On a candidate questionnaire, Hubbard identified rising costs and inflation as the top issue, calling for an end

Beyond the major upsets to the Republican Party in North Carolina, Tuesday’s results brought a milestone in racial representation in the state’s congressional delegation. North Carolina’s delegation is poised to flip from 10 Republicans and four Democrats to 10 Democrats and four Republicans, pending the outcome of some races close enough for a recount. It’s also set to include a record five Black members. U.S. Reps. Alma Adams, Valerie Foushee and Don Davis, all Democrats, are North Carolina’s current members of the Congressional Black Caucus. All three won reelection Tuesday. They’ll be joined in Congress by Democrat LaKesha Womack, who defeated first-term Republican Rep. Tim Moore, the longest-serving speaker in N.C. House history, in the 14th Congressional District. Womack owns a business development consulting firm and serves as a mentor in Goldman Sachs’ One Million Black Women: Black in Business program and as chief strategy officer for ASPIRE Community Capital, which lends to entrepreneurs, according to her responses to a candidate questionnaire from The Charlotte Observer and The News & Observer. Also joining them is Democrat Cyril Jefferson, the mayor of High Point and a former councilman, who unseated first-term Republican Rep. Addison McDowell in the 6th District. Jefferson will
On a beautiful afternoon in rural Edgecombe County, a crowd gathered under the late‑season sun to hear a message that has become impossible to ignore across eastern North Carolina: Families are hurting, and area leaders say the state must do more. The event last month brought together Gov. Josh Stein; N.C. Rep. Dante Pittman, D-24th District; N.C. Sen. Kandie Smith, D-5th District; Democratic N.C. Rep.-elect Lorenza Wilkins, who will represent the 25th District; and others, each offering a different vantage point on the same reality. Rising costs are squeezing households, small businesses and congregations alike. Speakers advocated for more than temporary political gestures to meet the moment. Jess Rivera, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and small business owner, opened the event with a message shaped by months of listening sessions across Greene, Wayne, and Wilson counties. Rivera, a Democrat, ousted incumbent N.C. Sen. Buck Newton, R-4th District, in Tuesday’s midterm election, riding a blue wave to victory that also resulted in Republicans losing majority control of the N.C. House. “Everything, and I mean everything, is more expensive,” Rivera said. “Food, gas, the coffee I drank this morning, utilities, healthcare costs — it’s all too much.” Rivera, describing the pressure on
